The Town of Milford is concerned that landowners who are planning a tree harvest on their property take the necessary steps to protect their interests, accomplish their desired goals and adhere to pertinent state local regulations. Timber harvesting in New Hampshire is affected by a number of laws that relate specifically to harvesting activities. Along with laws, wetlands regulations also frequently are involved. If the land is being harvested to prepare it for development, there are additional state and local regulations that apply. As the property owner of record you are responsible for payment of the timber tax, for obtaining the necessary permits, and for any violations of regulations regarding wetlands and erosion.

File an 'Intent to Cut' form. Before planning a timber harvest you must complete a form entitled, "Intent to Cut". The form is available ar your municipal assessor's office. The Selectmen must approve and sign your intent to cut before any cutting may begin. They have 30 days within which to sign said intent. (RSA:79).
Use a licensed forester. For your protection, we strongly suggest that you have a written contract specifying that the persons doing the work will observe the appropriate regulations. We suggest that you have a forester inspect your property. A forester can provide an inventory and a Land Stewardship Plan, which will improve the value of your property and possibly yield revenue on a continuing basis for years to come. What is in writing and signed by both parties protects both parties in the event of a dispute or failure to perform as called for in the contract. The UNH Cooperative Extension Forester is available at no charge to give advice and guidance regarding the harvesting and management of your forest resources. It may be to your advantage to use a licensed forester to conduct the timber sale for you. Your UNH Cooperative Extension Forester can provide you with a list of licensed foresters who can prepare and supervise the timber harvest on your land to ensure that your interests are protected.
Assure that your property boundaries and the areas to be cut are clearly marked.
